Inventory Control & Traceability

Warehouse inventory control and traceability with Solvo.WMS

Warehouse Inventory Control & Traceability

Inventory accuracy is not only a financial balance. Warehouse teams need to know what stock exists, exactly where it is located, what handling unit contains it, which lot or serial it belongs to, what status it has, and whether it is available for a specific operation.

Solvo.WMS creates a real-time operational inventory record by connecting every confirmed receiving, movement, putaway, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping, return, and count event to the relevant goods and location.

The same inventory-control model supports different operating environments, including manufacturing warehouses, food and beverage warehouses, and pharmaceutical warehouses. Each environment applies its own allocation, quality, expiry, and status rules, while the WMS retains a consistent operational history from receipt to shipment.

From quantity on hand to operationally available inventory

ERP and accounting systems usually maintain item-level balances, but complex warehouses require more detailed execution data. Two units of the same product may have different expiry dates, quality statuses, owners, or packaging conditions. They are not always interchangeable.

Solvo.WMS can manage inventory using configurable attributes such as:

  • item and product characteristics;
  • owner or stockholder;
  • lot or batch and serial number;
  • production and expiry date;
  • quality, quarantine, blocked, or available status;
  • warehouse, zone, aisle, rack, cell, floor, or other topology level;
  • pallet, carton, tote, container, and piece-level handling unit;
  • unit of measure, quantity, weight, and dimensions;
  • reservation, order, or customer relationship.

These attributes can influence where goods are stored, which stock is allocated, and what tasks operators are permitted to complete.

Preserve pallet, carton, and piece relationships

Inventory often changes structure inside the warehouse. A pallet may be split into cartons, a carton may be opened for piece picking, and different items may be consolidated for shipment.

Solvo.WMS supports configurable packaging hierarchies and parent-child relationships between handling units. Operators can scan and work with the appropriate level while the WMS retains the underlying inventory detail. This reduces manual reconciliation and improves traceability when goods are repacked, aggregated, de-aggregated, or moved through automated equipment.

Track goods from receiving to shipping

At receiving, the WMS identifies incoming goods, captures required attributes, and assigns a location and stock status. Directed putaway creates a controlled path into storage. Every subsequent movement changes both the physical and system location through a confirmed operation.

During allocation and picking, Solvo.WMS can apply FIFO, FEFO, lot, serial, owner, quality, customer, or other rules. At packing and shipping, verification confirms that the selected inventory matches the order. Returns and inventory adjustments follow separate permissions and reason codes so exceptions remain visible.

This event history helps users answer practical traceability questions: Where is the affected lot? Which handling units contain it? Who moved it? Which orders received it? What status did it have at each stage?

Improve inventory accuracy with guided work and counting

System-guided tasks reduce decisions that would otherwise depend on memory. Barcode terminals, labels, RFID, and other Auto-ID tools can verify the product, location, and handling unit at the point of work.

Solvo.WMS also supports physical inventory and cycle-counting processes. Counts can be planned by location, item, risk, or operating rule, while discrepancies follow controlled review and adjustment procedures. Because daily warehouse movements are already recorded in the WMS, counting becomes part of continuous inventory control rather than the only moment when stock is checked.

Share trusted inventory data across the technology stack

Solvo.WMS can exchange inventory balances, reservations, quality statuses, and execution events with ERP, MES, customer, reporting, transport, and automation systems. The WMS remains the detailed execution source for physical warehouse activity while connected systems receive the information needed for planning and customer service.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between inventory management software and a WMS?

Inventory software usually records quantities and transactions. A WMS adds location-level control and directs physical work such as receiving, putaway, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping, returns, and counting.

Can Solvo.WMS track lots and serial numbers?

Yes. Lot, batch, serial, expiry, owner, status, location, and handling-unit attributes can be maintained and used in warehouse workflows and allocation rules.

How does a WMS improve warehouse traceability?

A WMS connects each confirmed warehouse event with the item, handling unit, lot or serial, location, user, and time. This creates an operational history from receipt through shipment and return.
