What Makes Bulk Cargo Operations Complex?
- The quantity recorded in transport documents does not always match the quantity physically received or shipped. Bulk cargo may be accepted by declared weight or actual weighing, while shortages, excess weight, partial handling and natural losses all affect the terminal’s operational balance.
- Inventory changes continuously as cargo is received, stored, reserved and dispatched. Unlike discrete cargo units, the same bulk stock can be accumulated from several incoming deliveries and then released gradually through different outgoing operations.
- Incoming and outgoing flows have to be coordinated across vessel, rail and road operations. Cargo arriving through one transport front may be accumulated for later shipment through another, while available, reserved and already dispatched quantities must remain clearly separated to prevent the same volume from being allocated twice.
- Physical mixing does not eliminate the need for accounting traceability. Once bulk cargo is accumulated in a common storage area, an individual ton can no longer be traced like a container or vehicle, but the terminal still needs to preserve the accounting chain between incoming transport and documents, storage balance, reservations and outgoing operations.
